What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m², where kg is the person's weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared. A BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight, while the healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9.

Note: BMI is a general guideline and may not be accurate for athletes, pregnant women, or the elderly. Always consult a physician for personalized advice.

BMI FAQ

How is BMI calculated?

Body mass index = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m²). For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m is 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9. The calculator does this instantly and shows which category the result falls into.

What is a normal BMI?

According to the World Health Organization, 18.5-24.9 is the normal range for adults. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25-29.9 is overweight and 30 or above is classed as obesity. These cut-offs are the same for men and women.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not always. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so muscular people can score as 'overweight' while being lean, and older adults can have a normal BMI with too little muscle. Waist circumference and body-fat percentage give a fuller picture.

What should I do if my BMI is above 25?

A small, steady calorie deficit combined with more daily movement is the most reliable approach. Use the FoodLab calorie calculator to set a target, then browse the low-calorie and high-protein recipe categories for meals that keep you full.

Does BMI work for children and teenagers?

Children's BMI is interpreted with age- and sex-specific percentile charts rather than the adult cut-offs, because body composition changes as they grow. This calculator is designed for adults; for children consult a paediatrician.
